Together with his then lover, Bernard Boursicot, their les liaisons dangereuse became the inspiration for the 1988 Broadway hit M.Butterfly, and 1993 film of the same name.
Needless to say I find it difficult to believe Boursicot in their twenty-year relationship, not realize Shi was a man masquerading as a woman. Extremely difficult. Then again, you'd want to believe what you want to believe when your head, er . . . I mean heart is messed with.
Boursicot, now 64 and recovering from a stroke, showed no sadness when he learnt of Shi's death. What a fine display of gentlemen's behavior, not. Without Shi's shenanigans, Boursicot would just have been another bean-counter anonymous. Merde!
