Black Star Pastry

As I walked out of Black Star Pastry with a box of their goodies in hand, I kept rehearsing what to say to John when I got home.

I can't tell him I found the box of cakes and that I waited all of two minutes for finders keepers to kick in; he wouldn't buy that tale no matter how serendipitous it may seemed.

And I certainly am so not going to tell him a kind-hearted stranger bought me cakes; he would be furious that I would be talking to strangers let alone letting strangers let me eat cake.

So I thought what the heck let's tell him the truth.

You should see how John's face lit up when I told him we were going to have an arvo of cake-sampling. Out came the knife and slice, slice, slice . . . if you wondered why there are only three slicing when there were four cakes, well that's because John only got to see three cakes. I eaten the bread and butter pudding before arriving home.

And no, I don't feel any guilt whatsoever. Anyway here's our verdict:
E'clair - I should have guessed when I saw the word "Black" written on the e'clair but I didn't so I was caught off guard to find dark chocolate-flavored custard fillings were used instead of the classic vanilla-flavor favored by me. Naturally I am going to mark this down.

Bread & Butter Pudding - how can you go wrong with this Brit classic? Love this Black Star version; I think brioche is used and there is a hint of cinnamon, and orange rind? The custard is peppered with currants and silkily soft. Yums!

Pyramid Meringue - I thought I died and gone to meringue heaven when I took a bite. It is the softest and fluffiest meringue, ever. and right at it's heart is a triangle of elderflower (?) gelatin sitting on a base of lemon curd which in turn rested on a flaky sweet biscuit. Très délicieux!

Watermelon + Strawberry Cake - easily the winner of today's sampling, and not just because it look pretty. There are so many layers of delight to discover so I deconstructed the cake to savour each bite. This cake ticked all my boxes except the watermelon which was a letdown, it has a peachy color hinting of it's unripeness. The best surprise are the two tiny dried rose petals, which I greedily ground into along with the pistachio flakes. Très, très délicieux!

I am so dying for ze next round of cake sampling at Black Star Pastry.
